Philippine Medicine Day

Proclamation No. 407, s. 1953 A day to celebrate the importance of availing of the services of the medical profession.

Honoria Acosta-Sison is the first Filipina to become a physician after she graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1909. She was among the ten (10) selected Filipinos to receive a scholarship on the pensionados program out of the hundreds who took the exam. She returned to the Philippines in 1910 and began her practice in obstetrics at St. Paul’s Hospital in Manila.

As an avid researcher, teacher, and physician, she wrote and published nearly 200 papers and articles relating to caring for and advocating for Filipino women. Her works played a major part in the medicalization of childbirth in the Philippines.
